Monitor Wind Vane Self-Steering

On his solo, nonstop record setting around the Americas circumnavigation, Matt Rutherford relied on a Monitor windvane. Technically, he was "coastal cruising" a few hundred miles offshore and through the Arctic's Northwest Passage. However, on his 10K mile Pacific leg from Alaska to Cape Horn, winds did blow him nearly to Polynesia.

This video Extra describes the self-steering Monitor Wind Vane Matt Rutherford used aboard St. Brendan and features an interview with Hans Burnwell, owner of Scanmar International and inventor of the Monitor.
