What about when racing, when certainly not going to roller-furl? It is barely possible (on my 10 m boat) to extend the pole against the wind when already rigged. Also, I have seen some reference to an "after-guy".

Light airs only. On a 36 ft cutter, that pole is a monster and needs about 3 men to deploy.

Excellent instructional video . very easy to understand and how to get the best forward motion on light wind days ,sailing down wind ..
this is one of the easiest to understand videos .. and believe me there are a lot out there that are just too technical and they dont need to be ..
