A 40 foot boat will sink in an hour and a half with a 2" hole. Water will enter faster than any pump other than a high volume diesel salvage pump can manage. Through-hull fittings are holes in the boat just waiting to be unplugged, and finding the leak can be difficult in the rising bilge. Maybe through-hull fittings are simply a bad idea…..I nearly lost my boat once just from a misplaced drain plug.

Wow….just wow….now more stuff I hope I never need, in my "What If" box on the boat…just make sure you can get to them fast. When I re-do my through hull valves, I'm moving them to access available area's at all possible. Thank you

This is why you use the BEST through hulls you can, or better yet, use a single through hull and a reservoir tank.

More importantly, make the through hull easily accessible.

The putty stuff looks very similar to plumbers mait in the UK, often used to seal plastic fittings, it's non setting and sticky.

I used some of these ideas to fix a leak in Second Chances. what I did was two part under water epoxy and a wooden plug that was two years ago. still not leaking. now I put my dive gear on and did it from the out side so the water would help keep the plug in. and the epoxy sealed it up.
