I recall shipping over from New York to Bremerhaven aboard a 'troopship way back when. The Atlantic was almost millpond smooth in January. Totally unexpected. Things changed in the English Channel. We traversed it on the heels of what we were told was the worst storm in years. Our ship was rolling so badly I literally had to steady myself with a hand on the deck! There was an oil tankard about 200 yards off our port side in very heavy seas. The swells were so massive that when we and the tanker were both in 'valleys' between wave peaks we couldn't see each other. I still don't fully understand why everyone wasn't grossly seasick!
