It looks like the halyard was not tied off tight enough on that boat that capsized. Either that or some of the sail clips broke off the forestay. Really important to inspect these two parts of your foresail before taking off.

If you really want to learn how to sail in gale winds and really rough water, get into racing sailboats.

A properly keeled boat could sail without reefing in 30 knots of wind.

Then the mast and headsails need keeling design to have lateral resistance ahead of the sail effort and sail easily in 30 knot's.
