Most of the efficiency and driver safety aides in our cars were innovated by formula 1 teams. Eventually the innovations from AC boats will filter into regular sailing.
Innovation is exciting and attracts a young audience which is critical to any sports survival.

There was a lot of whining about AC 34 by people nostalgic about J Class etc, and the same complaints were raised about not connecting with "normal sailors" whoever they are. But the America's Cup from the very start was a contest between very rich guys who spent a lot of money on the most advanced naval architects and builders they could find, looking for any technological advantage. This new advance is completely within the tradition.
As far as attracting an audience is concerned, there are an almost infinite number of races on traditional boats to watch if you're into that but the audience is so small that television doesn't even carry Olympic sailing. I mean, they show curling!! People evidently find that more entertaining. We have the Rolex big boat series every year on SF Bay. Hell will freeze over before that is broadcast.
I attended the San Francisco AC races and have never witnessed a more exciting event in any sport. I say let the big boys rock and roll. The world's best sailors are certainly not turning up their noses. I've done quite a bit of sailing on traditional boats. Let's see the future. We're not going back to dial telephones.

The more I see these the more I think how ridiculous they are. What are they going to do about luffing rules I mean it's one thing for a leeward boat to Tap or touch the weather boat but now there's a 5m wing that's inevitable going to foul the other boat damage the rig and sails and worse hit the crew. It will puncture the sails and probably bring the rig down.

They will have to make it illegal to luff because whether the windward boat is in the right or wrong they can't always avoid contact so now the leeward boat will be at fault? Just leave it as cats.

I’m sure they will be fast and probably fun to watch – I was so wrong about the last boats so want to adopt a wait and see attitude – but this almost seems like change for its own sake (unless the KIWIs have been testing this concept in secret for a while)

Once again the sailing powers that be miss the mark of what the common sailor can relate too, to get people watching and involved common people must be able to relate and therefore make a emotional investment in the event. Sailing has been run by old school out of touch administrators to the point that the sport / hobby has become almost irrelevant
