Flooding from the stern, would suggest that the driveshaft packing seal failed.
Then the weight of water, in the engine compartment would force the stern down until water flooded over the top into the boat.
Unlike the Titanic, no watertight compartments on a canal boat
That's going to block the lock for some time I guess. Until the lock and the boat can be emptied, and repairs made.
The couple must be devastated.

Oh I really feel for these unfortunate people to lose not only their home but the love of their canal boat that gives them freedom to get away from the rat race. I hope they can recover the boat and restore it. It would devastate me if my power yacht was lost.
