The studio version of this song is wonderful, of that there is no doubt. But here, Newman's incredibly moving piano is highlighted, with those amazing passing tones and resonant deep notes, and those icy sounds up to the right of the keyboard, where they all come together to make this version an absolute classic.

As for the lyrics, I used to think of this song as having many levels. But in the end, there are only two: what he says about being an American, if you are born here, is true. But the hopefully obvious implication that ours is not the only way, that we have no right to try and enforce our beliefs on others, is right out there in front of this song, as is, again, that amazing and tear-inducing piano playing.

I am on a mission from God to find the best version of this song. Anybody know a better one than this? I can't wait for Cindy to come out tonight.
