Best of luck
Always do it right or don't do it at all… I was wondering why he wasn't with you when you were taking it out for the first time. When ever I fixed someone's car I always test drove it before I worked on it if possible and always after I fixed it. I just figured they would do the same on a boat. You can't just run it in the slip/dock and say okay all's good, because when you get it out on the open water that motor and everything will act and run different. I had many cars the idled just fine but when you went to take off it was not good.
Boy if it isn't one thing it's another. Sorry you are having all these issues. Hopefully it isn't a mis-matched part or something stupid like that. Looking forward to the resolution. You guys gotta move! Sailing is no fun without being able to leave the slip. Trust me I know. My first boat's engine never ran right, then had to have it rebuilt. Still didn't run correctly, was very angry, only to find out the gas tank was dosing my carb with dirt and debris. Gas tank was the cause from day one. You will find out whattup, hopefully sooner than I did. And hopefully with less expense.
Could you have tested the transmission while the boat was still tied up to the dock?
Vin, the different ratio means the prop will be turning slower and will need you to either use more revs for the same speed or change the prop to a more coarse pitch. How do I know? I've done the same thing and struggled for a year until I fitted a new propellor.
I hope its just the throttle cable adjustment. Let us know!
It is so so to get to
Hmmmm. Curiouser and Curiouser..
Theres a nut on the throttle going to the injector pump. I had to tweak mine to get it to spool up more rpms. You should be able to test it in the slip though. Going with a different gear ratio throws everything off as for as power and such. Your prop is matched with the engine horse power and gear ratio. I'm still fighting to find the correct size prop for mine. The book isnt correct and the different prop styles are misleading as well. I would like to see other comments though . Also, what video editing program do you have? Mac or windows? Thanks
One 'thumbs up' for the video, two 'thumbs up' for Brian. Sounds like he's worth his weight in gold. Now you've got two keepers, Amy and Brian. 🙂
$$$$…
If the forward was normal and the reverse did not feel like it was fully in reverse, then possibly the cable to the shifting lever needs to be adjusted. With engine off flip the lever forward and back a few times to get a feel for it, then have Amy do the same from the helm and see if the lever travels as far in each direction. If it doesn't the cable can be adjusted fairly easily.
It might be that the because it was slipping before that reverse wasn't engaging at lower RPMs and you were getting more prop walk off idle than you should have. Possibly now with the prop turning at a lower RPM the propwalk might simply be less pronounced unless you input more throttle to get more propwalk.
Another great video guys. I hope that this has all been worked out in real time for you and it is already fixed. I can't wait for the next video to find out. What a cliff-hanger Sailing Nervous has turned out to be lately.
Good job. I would have it checked by a professional also.
Did he do a shaft alignment? VERY critical adjustment.
I accesses the area behind my engine yesterday, which entails crawling over the engine. then you are stretched out vertical, there is no turning around. Tools are picked by feel only. Hopefully you don't drop or forget something! And this is in a marina, at sea I don't know if I would attempt any work. Your engine access looks awesome!
Good call having the mechanic test run the system, he should of done that anyway.
Bummer. I'm glad the mechanic is going with you. It will probably save a fair amount of back and forth trying things and then trying to describe what is or isn't working. He will be there and can see it/feel it. It will get worked out, one way or another.
So much excitement these lives we lead.
I cannot see the comments on this video— are they hidden??
We have been approved for financing for our 49 ft trawler dream. We have our liveaboard marina located too. The roadblock we've run into is obtaining insurance for our newbie adventure. Any recommendations and advise would be truly appreciated.
You’re seeing the reasons why many of us recommended rebuilding your old transmission instead of buying new. We’re all still rooting for you. Hope it comes out OK.
😱😳⛵🚩🛠⏱🙏
On a different subject – your dripless shaft seal. The video showed you installing the set screws, I am assuming two per hole for a total of four which is correct. As a safety to keep the stainless steel puck from ever moving forward put a SS hose clamp around the prop in front of the puck. This will have no effect on balance, barnacles on the prop have way more effect on balance. Have had a dripless for 18 years and no problems but know owners of sister boats who have had the puck move forward. It will only do that at night or rough seas or both. Hose clamp is cheap insurance and peace of mind.
Is the ratio different this trans, from the old one. If so new propeller.
If not the mechanic should have checked throtle authority, ie full run before leaving. If it was late, schedule for the next available day.
Cheers folks
Do
Great Choice!
You have great access to your engine!! We have access doors all around the engine but not wide open like yours. I hope you are able to get out sailing soon! ⛵️
Is throttle cable adjusted correctly, so you can 'kick' the boat into a spin turn? Is prop a feathering prop, and if so, is it fouled or binding? that'll totally upset your reverse response.
Afterthought: If the new trans' output gear ratio is different, your prop rpms are also different, as is your torque on the shaft. If everything is working correctly (e.g. cable adjustments, motor etc) and you have engine rpms at spec, then you may have to adjust your prop's pitch. Pitch, gear ratio, and rpms are all interconnected.
Its been a lot of weeks since the boat was out of the slip and you are getting near the end of useful lifespan for your bottom paint. My first hunch s is that the prop and/or bottom is fouled.
If that is not the case, my second theory is that given the misaligned output shaft height, its possible this transmission has a different gear ratio. As others have said, that would necessitate changing the prop or getting the correct replacement for (or rebuild of) the original transmission. .
If that is not the case, my third theory has to do with the fuel delivery problem that the boat seemed to have previously. You even may have the two problems above, and still have this problem as well.
Lastly, you seem to have a problem getting confused about the rudder angle and its possible that you were just not steering as much as you thought that you were or that there was an external issue like current causing what you experienced.
Standing by with pop-corn and opinions in hand,
Jeff
I've just started watching from the first episode after seeing this episode. Really impressed how you have come on and it is so nice seeing you both working and enjoying the experience. I am about to buy a Moody 346 so makes great viewing not only to see the boat in action but how you deal with the issues. Keep it up and live the dream.
Ah bottom growth xD
The mechanic should definitely have informed you of the difference in replacement to another gearbox. He should know better. But it is not unusual to make short and long so-called kicks with the engine. But it undoubtedly gives the experience that you have lost some horsepower. Maybe another propeller can make a difference – but not a knowledgeable solution I have. I understand your despair and I hope the so-called professional mechanic has been very humble when it comes to billing.
sounds like you are not getting the amount of 'prop steer' that you are used to. probably something wrong. not the same rpm at the prop as you used to get at the crank. wrong transmission?
