					<description><![CDATA[No one has ever explained in way I can understand. They dont ever let on that the main and traveler have separate jobs but they also over lap as well. sunfish and lazer dont even use travelers. The boom vang( downwind) and the a mainsheet (upwind)will flatten the sail in heavier winds.  In stronger winds you want flatter sails( outhaul tightened and  back stay hauled in plus tightened halyard also will flatten the sail in high winds)the main sheet needs to be hauled in high winds  then compensate with the traveler letting it out to the lee or sail side of the boat to get the correct sail attack angle depending on your tack-- pinching, tacking, reaching. By making the  mainsheet hauled in you must compensate with the traveler to keep the shape of the sail ( mainsheet) and angle of attack (Traveler). Dumping the traveler in high winds( letting it out to lee) will take away the heel but also this will happen if you let out the mainsheet but in high winds you want tight mainsheet to flatten the sail because in high winds you don&#039;t want a big draft or bulge toward the mast- airplane wing can be smaller in high winds just as jet planes have less bulge on the wing then gliders. In  light winds you might let the mainsheet loose but then you  have to bring the traveler more to windward or to the higher side of the boat away from where the sail is. I am probably wrong but this is how I see it. Then there is the fisherman reef where the traveler is let go so that the top of the sail will dump the wind out from the top.]]></description>
