"You're SURE he said that, Tony?", that's how quick a decision can be made to have you whacked, and Hoffa's face when he had an idea of what they were discussing was basically the last nail in the coffin. DeNiro's character probably kept him alive a bit longer than he otherwise would've gone, but that just meant that when the time came, it'd be a dear friend who had to give him the business.
