Good tips! Thanks! We plan to get down your way somewhere in the adventure we are planning, but we'll probably have to get some us sailing certified classes in California when we get the boat. We'd also like to get heavy weather training as well. Probably better to get that experience with an instructor than to have to learn it the hard way in a big storm.

At least get yourself a certificate of competence or something similar,Master Offshore .
There is free education available and onlt the exam is paid for.Go for a week on holidays and do a proper training with confirmation.The boat will not be insured without someone on board with the necessary qualification to leave the harbor.
If you like to know what you need to learn,go to IYT,International Yacht Trainng and check it out.
Great way to go through all the material online and then go and do the examination on a boat after a week of intense training with people who know what to do on a boat,instructors.Getting knowledge is not expensive,but not having it can be lifechanging for bad.
