Check your charts for any region in open ocean where the depth rises to a couple of hundred feet or less because that is almost certainly indicative of a submarine mountain or 'seamount' which are comparable to underwater mesa's.

Watch your depth sounder for the same thing because a lot of seamounts don't appear on charts and maybe your depth alarm can be set to let you know if you pass over one?

You almost always get crazy good fishing over and around seamounts and they are especially good around the margins for top-shelf species like Dorado, Mackerel, Tuna and smaller Swordfish up to maybe 100 pounds.

I don't know about the Atlantic, but in the Pacific you might even hit on some Giant Trevally or a really big Bluefin Tuna and if you do then it will be "all hands to action stations" until they maybe smash you off!

Those lures Kristin bought are great for little stuff like Mangrove Jacks and small snapper etc or to double as earrings, but you want lures around at least five times larger for Dorado and the like.

Bear in mind that if you don't want to get smashed off more often than not you also want to use monofilament line of an appropriate weight rating.

You probably don't want to even consider braided line because it parts at the slightest lateral contact with a hull or rudder or underwater structure and doesn't give you any advantage worth the inconvenience and irritation.

A steel trace is good insurance against the likes of smaller shark and tuna because bare monofilament probably won't even slow them down.

Big bluefin Tuna can reach almost 500kg or 1,000 pounds and a single wild caught fish that size can fetch over a million dollars at auction in Japan.

For that reason most game fishing boats have facilities for freezing them.

It would also be worth your while to get a game fishing belt for the longer fights otherwise the gear on your rod probably won't be the only tackle that takes a beating!

A trolling speed around 9 knots is considered to be a good average for the desirable pelagic species but if you can't cut that mustard then you lose nothing trying if you do the best your setup can achieve.

Logically, if you find a seamount and don't hook up straight away try tacking back and forth over it and it probably won't be long until you do.

For an average mono hull capable of around six knots or so under around 10knots breeze you could also try motor sailing to get that little bit extra speed for your troll.

Hope some of this is of use to you guys.
