I buy boats all over and rent them. I currently have 13 boats fully rented at an average rate of $750/month. My shortest lease is 6 months and currently on a 7 month waiting list. Its a buyers market so dont be afraid to lowball offer on any boat. There is no such thing as insulting an owner and if a broker tells you that…then get a new broker!!
Wife and I are looking for a nice live on sail boat. We want to launch out of texas an work our way to Florida. The keys. Bahamas an down to Belize. Love to hear ur advice. We have $100,000 to spend on a ship.
Yes! a similar video for catamarans (yes, they'll be more expensive) would be GREATLY appreciated! TY!
Great Stuff Mate 100%
Hey what do people need to look out for when buying a boat from the 70's or 80's? That's pretty old.
Thanks for the Great info. Looking forward to learning more. Thank you 👍😁
So I 30 and not 35ft seams to be the recommended minimum of boat size for ocean crossing? Thanks (I'm a total newbie)
What is your opinion about saddler 25 as second hand they can be £5500 I know they won't be the best of boats and won't easily cross oceans but they can and have done and for the price are OK for getting into yachting. I am hoping to live in a boat at some point and am thinking about saddler 25 as my first boat. What do you think?
Well done and good information!
What are the cheapest new Bluewater sailboats ?
Almost any boat can cross the ocean with a good captain and fair weather.
Good choices and #5 should be #5 _ Nice surprise to see the prices _ So i get the idea when refitted one could be "good enough" to go for about $65K usd _ I am in the gathering info stage 102 _ There are quite a few good ones out there that are not the well known names _ Just to name one is the Cape Dory _ Maybe like a tier two quality? _ I've come to the conclusion, subject to change upon new information, that when i am ready to buy i won't have one or two in mind, but instead i'll see what's out there, then check out the specs, etc on sailboat data – this is the over-simplified version, of coarse there is a lot to it as knowledge, knowing what to look for, all adds into the mix of making an informed decision _ IF at all possible i want to buy where i don't get high taxes added on too _ Anyways thnx for the vg video – from a thumbs-up subber :>)
Fantastic video very well done 🙂
What do you think about Degero 35 s model?
I’ve been building and repairing boats for more than forty years. Your suggestions here are good. The island packets, however are in a different class. Having looked behind the varnish so to speak, there is a level of quality to them that is comparable to most of the custom yachts that are priced hundreds of thousands more
Great information for me. For would be a good comparable catamaran for an entry level blue water boat?
Very nicely done 🙂
Boats are so much cheaper over there than they are in Australia. For example, the closest Beneteau to what you were looking at is $89k.
Any thoughts on a Bristol 40 for ocean crossing?
I’m puzzled by the prices stated in this video. I’ve been searching for blue water boat’s 37 – 40’ for 8 months or so on Yacht World and other sites and haven’t seen anything even close to these prices. That includes the brands featured. The IPs in the 37-40 range are well over $100k and forget about the HRs and Amels which are $200k plus boats. I’d love to get a Tartan but $80-100k seems to be the going rate for one in decent shape. BTW, I’ve been searching for boats of 1984 through 1997 vintage setting $65k as my limit while holding $20k in reserve for the refits and equipment refreshes that I know will be necessary. Boats with bolted on keels, deck stepped masts, exposed rudders and other undesirable features are in reach but not true blue water boats. Maybe the boats being featured are indeed in Europe somewhere but not on the US East Coast.
What about Irwin 37….any opinions on capability?
Honestly nothing below 30k isn't called budget. Maybe mid-range but budget is under 15 or even under 10k. And yes there are boats in this price range that can cross the Atlantic, it won't be of great comfort but it will do. Even a numble Dufour arpège can be had for 6 to 10k and will do it. Otherwise if the title was for mid-range boats its good content.
Are catalinas any good?
I like the way you think. Get in the water ASAP. Some of us that are starting have no clue. It's best to buy a boat ready to go.
Are these hurricane worthy?
HR for me when i strike lotto millions. HR 48. And else Island Packet. How are the Hylas boats? I like there loojs and interiors, hylas 46.
If you’re a financial minded blue water sailor, you keep it under 30’.
I would suggest you look at hull design before anything, think full keel, then budget for a full survey before putting your hand in your pocket further
Would you go back though your logs and give me your average noon to noon daily run on all your Beneteau's ocean passages. Plus the number of daily runs over 200 miles. Our 43 ft vessel's average with no engine use, no weather imfo, no light weather sails on 3 Atlantic crossings is 149 a day. Is that considered safe. 🤔⛵🌍⛵🌎 Phil
Remember…. nothing on earth is more expensive than ‘a cheap boat’ 🙃
100k subs or you can have me gold tooth!
Cant even get near these prices in Australia
Friend of mine ,years ago, had a 23 foot that crossed Atlantic 7 times. It was glass with twin keels, fiberglass and I believe it was Dutch built but that might only be because she was Dutch. Anyone have any idea?
Great video thanks
What about boats coming out of charter? Are they a good buy? Can you find a reputable surveyor in the islands to help prevent buying a dog? I appreciate your thoughts and agree the Catalina 42 you are paying for the name vs getting more value and I owned one for 12 years!
Honestly, i would love to find a dana 24 with a few more feet on it for a dedicated shower, and a bit more storage.
beginner offshore cruisers would be nice
I’m sorry too tell you but these boats are a bit over my budget of $4,000
My first trip from the Caribbean to Bermuda was crewing on an Island Packet 40. We were hit with 70 kt winds and 25' seas. No problem. The captain had upgraded from a brand new "Bendy-toy" 45 that suffered catastrophic structural failures crossing the Gulf Stream in 40 kt winds and 15' seas. The main bulkhead delaminated from the hull, the rug went slack and the hull could be seen to visibly twist as easy following sea crossed under the boat. No one in a storm ever said "I was so smart to save money and buy a cheap boat.".

I just watched a video from you, and these are the boats that you hate the most. In this video, you’re actually encouraging the purchase of these types of boats “” Bluewater, you are presently the person you’re going to grow to hate lol.
Among them which ones you can you sail alone? which ones can you do soloing?
Island Packets before 2002….check on mast chain plate problem…..$$$repair 18K.
