It has the same problem as hunting. Gatekeepers, the reason why hunting is dying off is cause of the old heads who think it HAS to be done THEIR way or it’s wrong. Combine that with the lack of space to do said hobbies and the expense of equipment, hardly any new people CAN AFFORD or FIND places to participate, and when they do they have to endure belittling from the experienced people.

You never mentioned how impossible they are to sink or capsize. Im buying a 26M (used) for that reason.

I have an M 19 and I get the snob treatment from real sail boats, but I don't care. I have a 50 Suzuki on the back, I can trailer into large lakes that real sail boats can't and I can spend a week with my kid camping on the water going remote places that power boats don't have enough gas to reach. I sail when I can and motor when I can't. No worries about engine problems and being stranded. I love the thing. I wouldn't sail it in the open ocean, but it's perfect for what I use it for.

honestly you sail different, all downwind and reaching, what a planing hull is good at, then punch into the waves instead of tacking. Saves us so much money on petrol.

I was looking for a boat, started looking at a macgregor19, wondered what it was like, watched some videos, the comments section was full of hate, so much hate from people who have never owned one. Then I found this " I have one, I bought it to teach and introduce my grandkids to sailing, to this day it still gets used quite a bit for all sorts of reasons, I am very happy with it" That was from the current Commodore of the New York Yacht club! You are wrong too bud, the good one is the 19, has a tiller instead of a wheel, lower profile, more water ballast, and best of all the mast breaks in two and is stored inside the boat when not in use, and the toilet is where it is on the X not the M.

Would this a good first boat for me?
50 year old, never sailed except basic cruising certification, wife lukewarm on sailing in terms of learning thing, 6 year son. Lake Ontario
