I look at this and think about the conversations of designing "Fly by Wire" into Formula 1 cars (machines) I don't think I would be comfortable in any situation where I don't have manual control over my systems. My 50' Ketch can be a handful to dock in crosswinds and I can't imagine not having full manual control.

This was a problem due to a technical error in the engine's throttle, and the captain had no other choice.

It is a very tricky area and shallow. Trying to hold your position while the waiting for the bridge during the Heineken Regatta on a windy morning was always a challenge. This had to be a mechanical / electrical failure.
