  1. @Lady K Sailing – I really enjoy you boat summaries. And especially, that you get into the affordable classic plastic. One I miss is the Contessa (both the 26 and 32) from Willy Kerr's Assent to John Kretschmer's Gigi to the 2019 "Longue Route" solo-non-stop circumnavigation of Pierre Huglo …. I feel, it just deserves coverage. I mean, it's hard to come up with a type that comes close to the operational history.

  2. The elephant in the room with any Taiwan boat is teak decks. Water leaks into the cored subdeck via the fastener screws. Subdeck gets wet and turns punky resulting in co$tly repairs. Get is surveyed!

  3. Totally agree tayanas always had that classic rugged seaworthy look you see a journey of a million miles when you look at one, beautiful lines and solid, hence why I watched your video when it popped up,you put my thoughts on these boats right into words, funny that,i have a bermuda 30 built by Cheoy Lee in hongkong (hence her name "china girl") sometime between 62 and 67 yet to find out her history via numbers carvings and inscriptions throughout the boat each one had personalised carvings that apparently all meant something apparently goes back to what yard it was built in and which team built it,very interesting looking forward to finding out….also please dont forget Kiwi boats we had some of the best designs and boats in the world, farr, young,Townson,Hartley
    Robert's,Davidson,ganley,Ross,whiting,Wright,gladden,,Morgan,Stewart
Lambert and a few others all had many designs and size variations to their names, thought they were all worthy of a mention, thanks for sharing, happy sailing

  4. Bob Perry once told me " weight is the enemy " ! I took his statement to heart and managed to remove 600 lbs of stuff out of the bow ( v berth, chain locker and what was hanging off the bow sprit and the Forestay. ) I switched down to a 120% Yankee hankon from the existing roller furling and followed suit with a diet in the stern taking off 140 pounds.
The boat came alive both in speed and tracking abilities. It was not unusual to not touch the helm for 45 minutes at a time and she never hobbyhorsed.
Of the 24 boats I owned in 40 years of sailing, without a doubt the best bluewater craft I have ever had.
Follow what the Master Designer said on this and you will be amazed.
    Thanks for the great video!

  5. I had never considered the Tayana for a boat till I saw this guy filming heavy weather in the atlantic! The motion actually looked like something that was handle-able vs watching my buddy in a Alberg 30! Comfort ratio on this boat confirmed the idea!

  6. Thanks a lot man I really appreciate all the information you share! How long before we see you back out on the water? Are you staying dry for the winter or heading south?

  7. love your videos, have you thought about doing one on Hans Christian… I've been researching these as well as Tayana… so far they are the two boats that jump out to me as value and seaworthy

  8. Thank you for this video. I continue to look at the Tayana 37. I think of Tayana as the Asian Island Packet. They are both built for ocean crossings with comfort and safety. IP may be a little better finished and a bit more modern in recent boats. But, they seem so close to the same basic mentality.

  9. hello! nice video, you really go into dept about these boats, i wanted to ask you a question, what do you believe is the best boat to explore the world solo? i would like a boat that has anough space for 2 people but would be easy enough to sail alone, also i know that smaller boats are slower because of hydrodinamics, what size of boat would you suggest that is fast enough to avoid a storm (and to wether it safely) but is small enough to be sailed alone, in other words, what do you believe is the sweet spot? i also don't like to have to maintain wood and don't care much for the looks of an interior (i'm more interested in the "workhorse" design), thank you and any other person who might want to answer me.

  10. This video is informative and well researched. I own a Tayana 37 and I would like to add to your description of the cockpit. The small cockpit is to prevent taking on massive volumes of water when sailing in high latitudes, which can rapidly compromise the stability of a vessel. I sailed a Cal 20 from San Diego to Hawaii and the large cockpit volume was of great concern. The philosophy of a Baltic stern is to deal with large following seas and prevent excessive surfing when breaking waves hit the transom; the aesthetics are secondary. Interior teak requires minimal maintenance due to lack of UV exposure. Yes the exterior teak is a bit excessive in terms of adding unnecessary maintenance, some AwlGrip the rail but we have ours varnished.

  11. Great video except Bill Crealock of Pacific Seacraft fame designed the Westsail 32, not Bob Perry. I enjoy your content so keep em comin'!

  12. Just came across your channel. Nice videos and subjects. Thanks!

Tayana and the Ta Yang yard made a lot of boats besides the T37. They made 202 of the Robert Harris designed Tayana Vancouver 42 of which I am happy to own one. The T48 and T52s are also fantastic boats. The T37s were not without their problems. Wet cores in foredecks and chain plates and knee issues. But teak decks on some boats aside they do make great, true blue water boats.

  13. "I have to be very careful not to get it wrong" but you attribute the Westsail to Bob Perry? Your review did no justice to the Tayana, especially the Perry designs. You called the Island Packet a battleship and referred to the Tayana as the aircraft carrier in another video. Would have been a perfect opportunity to elaborate!

  14. Good stuff. I own A 1986 37 Tayana Pilot House. Simply love it, As A single handed, offshore cruiser it's hard to beat, when inside the Pilot house I'm, dry and comfortable. That is priceless for me, where my boat shines is the motion in large waves and Perry gave the boat generous sail area and surprises people in light wind. Everywhere I go I get complements on how nice she looks. I love the teak down below, yes, they have a few problems, but the support is amazing, every problem you might have someone else has fixed it, which for the do-it-yourself sailor is very helpful. Again, great review, is this the perfect boat for everyone. no, but she is the perfect boat for me. Cheers

  15. They are extremely comfortable at anchor compared to the lighter modern designs, comfortable and safe at sea too. Timeless beauties. Their keel is also very safe when you accidentally go bumping the bottom and the cutaway and narrow fin profile makes her surprisingly fast once they get moving.

Personally, if i had to do it again, I would look at the modified fin wth skeg Perry boats, like the Passport or the Valiant, you gain a bit more agility and loose little.

Those looking at Tayanas, also check out the Baba's, which are very similar Perry designs.

  16. I watch your videos all the time and your great but my favorite boat is the Hans Christian 48T center Cockpit the rear birth is amazing and the Pullman birth is just as good , she sails good and all her tanks are in the keel and her lead also , they didn’t make her in a ketch but her sister ship the 43 they did . Do a review on this boat please ! Thank you P.S. I had a 1984 Hunter 34 for 12 years my first boat I learned a lot in those years and the Hunter was very nice for our first boat !

  17. My understanding is they have an incapsulated, iron keel, instead of lead. I'd be bothered that if any water got in, and I have to think it does, my keel is corroding out from under me. Is this not a legitimate concern?

  18. Their boats seem legit and thats why they hold their value so well. I saw one video where the owner had neglected their Tayana and it had leaks and mold all over, very painful to see someone mistreat a great boat that could have been cared for by someone else that deserves it.

  19. The company building Tayana boats was Ta Yang, they have been closed of business since 2020 September
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tayana_Yachts
    Robert Perry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Perry_(yacht_designer) designed several models for them: CT-37 (1976), CT-54 (1975), CT-56 (1986), CT-65 / SCORPIO 72 (1983), Tayana 37 (1976), TAYANA 47 CC (1991), TAYANA 47 DS (1991), Tayana 48, TAYANA 52 (1983)

For Ta Yang, another Robert, Robert Harris also known from MacLear & Harris, designed the Tayana Vancouver 42 and Tayana 65.

Finding these boats "everywhere" was part of the plan: Ta Yang means "big ocean" in Mandarin, and Tayana means "belongs to big ocean".

  20. Love my Baba 30! Bob Perry designed, and still does design, so many great boats. The Tayana is great but if I went bigger the Valient 40 would be my pick. Oh and my water tanks are split between both settees along with a waste tank and my diesel tank is under the floor just ahead of the engine.
