I wonder if this was inspired by the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race (now underway) that starts in Sydney Harbour on 26 Dec and ends New Years Eve in Hobart. The first race was held in 1945 immediately after the end of WWII.
It is well fits the National Lampoon's description of a rich man's sport ~"expensive, uncomfortable and dangerous."
