My father taght me to sail many years ago, the sixties, and had a theory about seasickness. This was that no car driver is ever car sick, only passengers. If you start to feel queasy take the wheel and hand steer for a while. It is not scientific but it seems to work for me. Avoid being below as much as possable and try to keep the horizon in sight. I only now feel sick if I am cooking in a swell which I stop if feeling bad and take the wheel. Good luck and bon voyage.
I I am so excited for you. I feel like I was right with you during the many months of the refit/rebuild. Looking forward to many more videos of your adventures.
Don't you know bananas are bad luck on boats LOL
Very fun videoing on this episode. But what's the low down on Internet reception while sailing? I used to have a horse farm near my pad. I used the wet dry vacuum as an anti fly device. Just suck them up, then a shot of Black Flag!
Hoping there is a plan to relocate the dingy…….spoils a lot of shots.
Be safe, Spoil the boat, And never get in a hurry! Then spoil the boat some more. Guard every step of progress the best you can, But above all else have fun! Great video's!
I'm jealous! Thier dogs have better gear than I do! LMAO!! Our 10 month Brazilian Mastiff rips up everything we put on her. Coldest time of the year here and she has a very thin coat.
How much fresh water can you hold? Water maker? For the dogs they make training mats, They don't cost much and you can keep the mess contained to one spot, Just a thought. One spot that's easy cleanup. If you think about it, While under sail it does require training. You can use Velcro tape to keep them in place. Save your boat some damage.
Congratulations, yes, your first offshore passage is a big deal and you aced it!
I was born on that bay! Have a great journey!!!
I’m still trying to catch up. I’ve honestly been binging your videos trying to catch up and I’m almost there. It’s very fun watching you guys live out my dream. Thank you! One question, some of your drone videos shows your bilge pump going quite regularly. Is that normal given all the work you guys have done? Any way. From cold miserable Wisconsin. Thank you.
Unofficial “rule of the road”. Might has Right. If it’s much bigger than you, stay way far away.
Mildly salty
Where the hell is your safety harness? Never ever leave your cock pit after dark without your safety harness. Specially on the open ocean. And don't forget it.
Please don't leave the helm alone when sailing! its not worth it and as you know things can just appear out of nowhere!
Gotta have that peanut butter on the pancake!
I have a few questions for you guys. How do the dogs do on the boat and do you have like an area for them to use the bathroom on the boat? I haven't gotten to watch all your videos yet so I don't know if you have already covered this topic. I'm super excited that I found this channel and look forward to more content 🙂.
How is it possible to rebuild a boat to a house like that ! How much did it cost for it to fun properly
I’ve crossed the pacific many times by Submarine. Enjoy the Sun Winds and Smells. Slow it down.
FIrst I have to thank you for sharing all of the high´s and lows, your work and the good Informations. This is realy something GREAT!! And second apologies for my poor English. May I ask, and maybe this was already asked and answered but I could not find it through all the Episodes I have almost Binge Watched, Why do you start the journey and sail through the night? Or why do Sailors sail often through the night? Apologies if this is a ridiculous Question. Thank you and always "eine Handbreite Wasser unter dem Kiel" – a hand's breadth of water under the keel
Those Hampton Roads biting flies are no joke. They come out around that time of day and are the worst.
FYI
I got a B+ in,
Not To Shabby!
So, I've got that going for me
Those biting flies (called deer flies, I think) are horrible on Lake Michigan as well. If you spend any kind of time on the beach without spray they’re unbearable.
On a ship, boat (that's a submarine), or small craft (you guys), you stand a watch, not a shift. Sorry to pick nits. Very nice video. The standard for sailing channels, IMO, is Uma, but you're so close already! I'm slowly catching up, and not looking ahead. You have a super channel here! I appreciate the work you put into it. Love the dogs.
You're pollywogs
Gr8 to be watching your journey.
As a dog lover pleased to see your taking them with.
I’m curious as to where they go to the loo?
How much did that boat cost you when you won auction!?!!
It’s great to see you venturing into the night to test your night sailing skills. Now I have a concern, I noticed you rarely wear your PFD’s day or night, on the dingy or the boat plus you don’t tether while on the way. I know you have a 10K lbs keel but I also know you are in crazy waters in the Atlantic that at times has rogue waves; I pray you never find one but IF you did it would be safer to have a PFD and tether in use.
Looking at all your controls, how many lines (type, size, lengths) does the Beneteau 49 need while on the way? Did you inspect/replace any before stepping the mast? Do you keep any spare rope onboard and know how to splice it if needed?
Don’t forget that “As are the ropes so is the sailor.”
unbelievable, I'm constantly smiling for 65 episodes. You're awesome! 'pretty sure that's how it works'
(Me being a Delaware res.) Not sure where your at when fly's started but lower Delaware bay is known for them biting horse flies. They are nasty.
FYI: try banana extract sometime in your pancakes!! Oh yeah!!
Broke over halfway and catching up! Great everything guys! CANNOT wait to catch up!
I have a question for Brett. does your training in IFR help with the night passages? also, along the same vein, does your training on ATC communication help when listening in and communicating on a sailboat radio?
That was super exciting! Great work! Happy sailing!!
Brett, the dingy is in de wrong place. It slows the boat, catching too much wind.
