Question: How do I know if the idle jet on my outboard carb is clogged?
Answer: If it's a 2-stroke and you don't run it twice a day every day, it is.
If you want to be sure, crank it with the choke on full and hi throttle, get it to run, then lower the throttle and choke and listen to it die. Yup, idle jet is clogged.
Easy fix, pull the carb and blow keyboard cleaner air throught the jets, you will be amazed at how that tiny little speck of gummy dried oil that comes out of the idle jet was all it was. Better clean the float valve too while you're at it.
Now, practice prevention by adding a small amount of liquid carburetor cleaner to your fuel supply and measuring your 2 stroke oil to prevent excess oil in the fuel.
It was a good guess about water in the fuel too, that's the other extremely common cruiser problem. The fix is to find a plastic cup just the right size and cut it to fit snug ober the fuel cap to prevent water getting in the air vent, cuz we can't be expected to open and close the air vent every time we use the dinghy, can we?
