Glad that you're back in the water, and ready to start Adventure lll. I visited Portavadie during my first voyage aboard the Puffer VIC32 in 1983. At that time it was eerily abandoned, a Council housing scheme from the 1970's abandoned on the shore of a "big hole", it could have been the set for some sci-fi movie. There was certainly no ferry across the Loch from Tarbert in those days, as there was no traffic going there. The idea was a typical Scottish Office waste of public money to build concrete oil rigs, but it was soon realised that steel was the better material, as was being used on the East Coast, for Scottish oil exploration. We were told that one rig was actually constructed, but it was so far behind schedule that penalty causes were being invoked, and that construction was still underway as the rig was towed away down Loch Fyne, with constructors jettisoning gear into the waters of the Loch as it went! I don't know about the " secret submarine " story, from my experience of the population around Loch Fyne, nothing stayed a secret for very long!
We certainly encountered plenty of submarine activity on our voyages in the 1980's. I remember being closely monitored and photographed from a "MOD Plod" launch as we sailed past the Coulport facility on Loch Long where nuclear fuel rods and other material for the Royal Navy base at Faslane was stored in caverns dug out above the shores of the Loch. Rather more relaxed was the attitude of the US Navy at their mooring in the Holy Loch, where everything was on display, and the ratings aboard the mother ship seemed more intent on scanning our decks to ascertain if we had any female company aboard than worrying about security matters.
Watching you sewing the cover on the helm reminded me of an equally tricky job during my cycle racing days, re-sewing the covers on tubular racing tyres after a puncture repair.
Greatly looking forward to your Series Ill postings, safe sailing.
Safe travels!
