You can use a spring line to get off the dock in those situations. You tie a bumper at the back corner of the boat with a spring line from aft to the front tied to the dock. Put the boat in reverse and it will pull the front off the dock using the bumper as a fulcrum. Then you turn away from the dock and put it in forward and have a dock hand release and throw the line to you.

Thanks for the video! We never saw 40kt on our trip south but we had 35 a few times. I think I blocked it out until now, cause watching this just brought back the memories of all the extreme motion and vomit on the side deck! One trick we use on Fern to get off the dock in wind like that is to take a line attached at the stern, then bring it forward and loop it to a cleat or bullrail on the dock near midship, and hold on to the other end on deck (make sure you loop it in a way that's easy to pull back in). Ryan will put the boat in reverse while I hold tight to the line from the deck, standing about even with the point where the line is looped on the dock. The stern pulls in while the bow comes out. When the bow gets far enough out, turn the rudder hard over, release the line and put the throttle strong forward to keep the bow out before the wind pushes it back in and get out of there. Can't wait for gin cocktails on the beach somewhere in Mexico next year!

I didnt see much use of the windvane. Did you guys not use it much? I used my monitor the entire way down and it worked like a dream which surprised me with the trip being all downwind. Some of those drone shots and shots with the sun in the frame are absolutely cinematic looking!!! and i like that winch idea mack!!!!
