I like the thorny patch also. Should have some WIFI, and get a good feel for different ports.

Off shore if crew was experienced and leaving in Nov. since leaving in Jan with inexperienced crew and new to you vessel. With a new to you vessel I would not want it’s first voyage to be off show even if that vessel has done it before. I would want to learn the vessel better and if something goes wrong there are several marinas along the way to pull in and make needed repairs if required. While sailing dead into the wind sucks this appears to be the safest and most comfortable option given the experience of crew who does not know each other and nobody knows that particular vessel that well.

Going offshore or I-65 will get your new captain some sea-time, learning by doing as you can only learn offshore seamanship by doing it, not from a book.

You answered your own question. Since it takes time to build a team, and not knowing the capabilities of the team members, it's best to take the least risky route. That would be the thorny patch. That will give Father Tech diverse experiences and introduction to the Caribbean countries. Picking anchorages, country entering/registration procedures, fees, visas, opportunities to practice dealing with bureaucracies practicing his French and Spanish as well as polishing his British English. This path has the most experiences and the least risk. However, It will add an additional requirement for crew candidates – having a current passport. It will also add time length to the trip – stops for recouperation. And additional cost.

Cool Video I'd route it a little differently as to avoid certain unwanted individuals on my Yacht but if it's his first time Sailing there, I would leave little room for error even may advise to turn off the AIS for Thorny patch or just make sure he does not Ping Location at all times even on I65. So Cool you are taking them with you.

I like the Thorny patch option since father tech is a new Sailor, he will gain experience anchoring and going from port to port in the Caribbean.
