Sailing One Life is only channel pointing to the long term solution. They visited the FIRST and only recycling facility in Caribbean (at the time at least) for their grand opening. SOL also worked in the facility for a day celebrating it’s grand opening. Until there are recycling facilities and islander education on all or most of these islands throughout the world, nothing will change. Asking big business to not supply water and other beverages to people who need it would take world progress backwards. Grass roots efforts to create a recycling infrastructure and the right attitude with LOCALS as well as tourists is the only way. There is a small outfit that has created 3D printers using trash plastic as medium for creation. They will be placing them Delos and Uma in near future.

Your best episode so far…… Re: Plastic waste: what amazes me is that the solution is not technology but actually pretty simple…. In many Nordic countries, you take your empty bottles back to the shop and they pay you a little for it which comes off your grocery bill….. imagine expanding this out a little to pay these people for the plastic they bring back…. and then expanding it a bit more to legislate the producers to force them to take the same amount of waste back as they produce… OF course they will not do it for free and ultimately the consumers will pay but that's not a bad thing to change our behaviour. I really don't believe that these complex cleanup machines are the answer other than a one off attempt to clean the ocean.

The only way to combat that polution is to reward the collection of it.
If a company is willing to setup recycling infrastructure in the area, and literally put at a call to arms saying they will reward for any plastics handed in to their "weighing centre", maybe even a boat that goes around. The locals would quickl;y find all the plastic and hand it in, and not throw it in the first place, just directly turn it in to this model.

Not sure% what mechanism of recycling, and what the finances look like, but surely, if the raw materials already exist, it has to be cheaper than producing new plastics from oil, and if it isn't, it should be made so.

Garbage is a huge problem, not just in remote islands but world wide. We cannot blame the companies who produce the packaging, the biggest problem are people and their shitty attitudes like the world owes them and they can do whatever they want. Land based garbage is even worse than ocean based garbage. Only by creating garbage awareness in marinas and harbours, can we hope to reduce ocean garbage…..enjoy your sailing adventures, wish I could afford a boat as well.

I don’t know with could be the solution either, but collect some human garbage (the only one) for sure make you fell a little better. Very thanks for that message. Every small action count. I don't know why the islands are not doing this, It would be a solution to waste and a new market for them. The raw materials come in from the ocean as waste and they can convert it into fuel they can sell. A small Still to convert plastic into fuel is relatively cheap - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9-cGSbQ_Mg and there are lots of videos on how to do it
