If you were single handing and got an unexpected gust from the critical direction just aft of the beam, what would your sequence of operations be to minimize the risk? Thanks. The best fun per dollar boat I’ve owned was a Stripped out Piver Nugget.

As a novice sailor myself coming from dingies to my biggest ever 25ft fixer up boat and hopefully to bigger things in future.

Would like to learn more about VHF radios/transponders/ channels and how to do things or how to communicate with other boats and authorities.. instead of just being on the water and shouting STARBOARD to other boats and making friendly gestures..

I sail a Topcat K3 and in my experience the death zone is a lot easier to pass going towards upwind as easing the sails (mainly the traveller) actually helps. The bigger issue is bearing away as the bow will take a dive and the rudders get lifted out of the water, even standing in the trapeze way at the back. Steering is pointless then 😉
