I think the real problem with all ocean going foiling sailboats is that the risk of the foils hitting something is increasingly high. If there was a rule that only allowed one fin and one rudder (protected by the fin) they would be less susceptible to damage and retirement. Of course, elimination of foils is not going to happen—the need/greed for speed is just too powerful—but maybe there should be a class for non-foiling multihulls. Now that I come to think about it, are foils allowed on the 50ft class?
