I like to be warm but once you get into the tropics it then becomes hot, hot, hot. Enclosures become a burden, you then need shade tarps over your boat even to sleep at night. And nothing like some repair where you are running sweat even though practically naked. Paint dries so quick you have trouble keeping a wet edge. My pillow is ruined after two months of sweat. No need for blankets or clothing. My wardrobe was shorts and a t shirt. Yes, not cold, but reality bites when you are sleeping on wet sheets.

1) I would get the fridge fixed – most likely the thermostat is at fault and this is a cheap part. That one little measure would add to the quality of your life. 2) Wear more clothes but if the temperature (high or low) is such an issue, then fit a small air-con unit. It works in reverse (i.e. heating) at around a 3:1 ratio in terms of heat out vs. energy in. It can be run from either shore power or the engine. Or, joining all the dots, leave your fridge on all the time. It is a heat pump just like an air-con unit. It produces heat in the cabin and cools the cool-box. A nominal 720W solar PV array is more than enough to run it constantly even with short cloudy days. It will produce gentle heat. 3) I am not a fan of an enclosed cockpit. If you want to be enclosed go down below. A mariner needs the best visibility even at anchor and a sailor needs to feel the wind on his/her ears to be able to steer and have the best 'situational awareness' in all conditions. Can you imagine Mutiny on the Bounty, or Pirates of the Caribbean where the helmsman is sat in an enclosed tent at the back of the boat? If in port or at anchor and it is cold, close the washboards and have gentle heating, e.g. the fridge!

I am new to full time sailing. I have been lucky to have been in FL since we got our boat. My wife and I are living on the hook in Key West for the winter. Can’t stand the cold!!! Waiting on our USCG cert before we can leave the country.
Hoping to make the crossing to the Med in the spring…. Looking for some crew for the crossing…

People who haven't done it never realize how much colder it gets on the water. Having grown up on Lake Ontario with short sailing seasons I can say first hand that you want to be heading south in September to avoid the early cold. Ofcourse that means dodging a hurricane or two potentially. But I hate the cold too. I can see myself "wintering" in Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago or the San Blas islands in Panama. I would "summer" on the east or gulf coast. 😀
