Navigam la doar 3 mile nord de punctul nostru de ancorare actual, aproape de marginea vestică a mării și ne îndreptăm spre explorarea unui nou loc. Aruncăm ancora odată ce ajungem în golful uimitor cu stânci roșii și apă turcoaz și sărim rapid în barca și ne îndreptăm spre țărm. Prietenii noștri de pe sv Delos sunt deja acolo și am pornit împreună într-o drumeție prin valea pustie. Abundă cactus gigant în multe soiuri, plus găsim o populație mare de crabi. În curând ajungem de cealaltă parte a insulei și suntem tratați cu o priveliște incredibilă a apei turcoaz adânci și limpezi de sub noi. Înapoi pe Calico Skies Grace sare în apa liniștită pentru a se răcori când soarele începe să apune. Este un vis al croazierelor transformat în realitate: totul este liniște și perfect calm și frumusețea uluitoare înconjoară barca noastră în acest ancoraj incredibil. Pe măsură ce culorile cerului se schimbă de la portocaliu la violet, ne îndreptăm spre țărm pentru un foc de tabără cu prietenii noștri pe Delos. Este o experiență suprarealistă, în timp ce valurile blânde se prăbușesc pe plaja cu nisip alb și ne bucurăm de seara alături de prietenii noștri speciali, admirând frumusețea vastelor stânci deșertului și jucându-ne cu micuța Sierra. A doua zi dimineața suntem tratați cu unul dintre aspectele noastre preferate ale vieții de croazieră, când lucrurile merg bine: o ancorare minunată, neclintită și o dimineață frumoasă și însorită. Ne bucurăm de cafeaua în cockpit, iar Bill ne preia laptopul de la Delos cu un videoclip care este acum încărcat și gata de difuzare. Apoi pornim într-o aventură pentru a găsi un grup de lei de mare care locuiesc pe o insulă din apropiere. Cea mai mare populație din Marea, numărând 600, o găsim pe mulți chiar înainte de a ajunge până la fața locului. Tauri uriași lenevesc pe stânci stâncoase, iar alți lătrat puternic răsună pe pereții din jur. Mergem spre destinația noastră, la Los Islotes, unde găsim și mai mulți lei de mare și suntem tratați cu o întâlnire apropiată și personală a unei perechi angajate într-un trist romantic. Există, de asemenea, o femeie foarte jucăușă care se scufundă în bucle sub noi și sare prin aer pe care suntem norocoși să o prindem atât pe gropro sub suprafață, cât și deasupra! Pe drumul de întoarcere suntem ademeniți într-o explorare a peșterii care se transformă într-o aventură spontană de scufundări libere. Apa perfect limpede și adâncă este ireală și ne face plăcere să înotăm prin arcade și peșteri subacvatice printre pești viu colorați. Claritatea apei în peste 30 de picioare este remarcabilă și combinată cu structurile de stâncă subacvatică este o experiență unică. Ne întoarcem cu barca la ancorajul nostru La Parida și mergem la țărm pentru a ne răcori pe plajă. Bill și Sierra se simt confortabil întinși în niște bazine interioare de apă, bucurându-se împreună de soare, căldură și atmosfera leneșă. Not that I don't love videos of sailing, battling weather, and overcoming challenges which is a way of life on the sea. That's one of the reasons I watch sailing videos is to understand how you live on on boat!

Sea of Cortez, S/V Sea Vixen March, 2008. Part 1 of 3

First, the backstory. In 2006, a friend of mine who was a yacht broker in La Paz, Mexico contacted me. He knew that I was looking for a blue water boat. He called and said, “Man, I have the boat for you! She is blue water all the way and good to go.” It was a Rawson R-30, super heavy boat, classic lines, spartan, yet very functional interior. Every system on the boat had redundancy. If the system at the helm failed, the system at the Nav Station still worked, and vice versa.
The story that I was told was… a very prominent person in the San Francisco Bay area had a son, this son was supposed to complete college and be assimilated into some business. The son was a slacker. The father of the son told him, “I will finance whatever you want to do for one year, if you come back and do whatever the son was expected to do.” The slacker decided that he wanted to cruise.
The son took this ultra-rigged out full keel sailboat (Rawson R 30) south with a friend. The son had had enough of sailing by the time he had reached La Paz, Mexico abandoning the boat in La Paz and the boat sat for almost 2 years on the hard.
Enter me. An acquaintance of mine in La Paz contacted me and said I have the perfect blue water boat for you. This boat had redundant systems. If something failed there were back ups. This boat had lots of sails, an Asymmetrical, a Chute, a 130 Genoa, a brand new main, storm sails and a drogue; and a brand new diesel with 95 hours and two alternators, new rigging, new paint. The electronics alone were worth more than I paid for the boat. The only thing that was not redundant was a backup fuel filter system, which later was a problem. After a satisfactory survey, I bought the boat sight unseen. The adventure getting to the boat is an entirely separate story. I had 2 months to find a crew to help me move the boat from La Paz to Puerto Vallarta. I finally settled on a friend of mine who was a Chef at a ski resort in Colorado and his two idiot (sorry, novice) sons. Their experience had been a 14’ John Boat on mountain lakes in Colorado. I grew up on boats and sailboats . No problem, right?
We flew into Cabo and got a life changing, scary as hell ride to La Paz. I asked our driver what all the monuments were along the road. He said, that is where people have died in accidents, as we screamed along at over 100 mph, as I looked in the rear-view mirror, my loosely secured kayaks hovering above the Chevy Suburban. After a taco and copious amounts of beer stop, we arrived in La Paz. Me and my green crew stayed in a hostel for a few days while working on the boat. Hooked up with my friend Jeff, who was a legit Olympic sailor to give my crew lessons on Jeff’s boat. This was a total waste of time. My crew could not get out of the John Boat and OH MY GOD, look at the fish, let’s go swimming in the ocean mode. We finally had gone through all systems and added a very copper heavy bottom paint along the waterline.
Evening before Day of Departure: I was not scared but concerned because of a very green crew. I had sailed in many conditions and was particularly attentive to weather windows. My friend Jeff had printed out weather fax conditions for me for the next 3 days. I went to the marina laundry to do last minute cleaning and to get one last real shower. As I was folding my laundry, this guy strolled in (I am not making this up.) He looked like a pirate or maybe he was an apparition. He had long greasy hair, a heavy long coat like an oil skin foully. I think that he was Australian, but he spoke like a Scottish pirate. And no, it was not Plukky. He says, “Laddy, I hear yer headin’ across the sea t’morrow.” I said, “yes, me and my new crew.” He said, “You will find trouble, the sea will turn again ye.” I laughed and said, “we have the latest weather reports. We’ll be fine.” This pirate smirked a greasy smirk and said, “Have it yer own way.” And left.

it's always an extra special joy when you get together with the Delos Tribe. The Nugget seems to get more attention than most children; mainly from adults, not other children, but she seems to enjoy it.
Diving in that cave was INCREDIBLE!! So glad you were together incase someone got in trouble.
Loved the upclose sea lion segment.. Usually see them lying about snoozing.. SeeLying? But you got some super moving energetic videos of them.. Not sure how they converse with one Bark lol but no translation needed for the romantic dance.. and the fin embrace was wonderful.. I hope as nice for her too.
