To give an idea of the absence of financial regulation in Ireland, a group of mainly Irish investors had enough resources to buy the Christina 0 for $65 million .. and then refurbish it. They were able to claim the cost of refurbishment against their tax bills. So it was a giant tax avoidance scheme. That was 20 years ago. Now I believe it's for sale for $25mm. You gotta save a lotta tax to feel nothing about a $40mm loss, even it was taken over 20 years.
