2. White hull, paint bottom 1 coat red, then 2 coats black or of a different color. (so when you see red, you know that you need to touch-up/repair or paint bottom.) Maybe the bottom color to match color of the canvas? White or a very light color (maybe light blue) on the hull so it does not absorb too much heat from the sun and dry out the wood planking (again). Really like your series, and the excellent craftsmen you have working on her and the ladder climbing dog is amazing – are you going to have a figurehead carved of the dog with tongue out and ears flopping in the wind?

7. If you look at the current episode of Magic Carpet, they explain why their boat had so much rot: lack of fiberglass. They are wooden boat lovers, but they are going to stop the leaks by installing fiberglass from the roof down, over the deck, then up the bulwark with no gaps. I understand that it is not fun for DIYers to install fiberglass, and Aladino is trained boatbuilder. I enjoy watching Yaba no end regardless! It keeps getting better and better.

13. You have a traditional caulked planked hull and you plan on sealing it with epoxy. (Facepalm) Don’t do it. Think I’ll come back in another 3 months and see how this idea went.

19. Never pays to be too caulk-sure. Paint the hull marine blue and then ivory white above the water line. Try doing some modeling and see that you think. Use a darker blue to hide weathering and any fouling. Use the VERY best quality marine paint…don't go cheap on that.

20. Each type of boat hull has is strengths and weaknesses. For a wooden boat hull, it has three main weaknesses: Teredo worms, UV light, and fresh water penetrating the hull (saltwater actually pickles the wood and preserves it).

    Fiberglass and epoxy would be your best bet, but you'd have to do both the inside and outside of the hull to completely seal the wood and prevent movement. As long as the epoxy and fiberglass are never penetrated, allowing water in, the boat will literally last forever. As you've already started to build-in the interior furniture and can no longer reach all parts of the inner hull, this really isn't an option anymore (unless you want to disassemble everything).

    The next best option is to seal and paint the hull as you would normally, and then use hot tar, tar paper, and thin sheets of copper nailed to the exterior of the hull with silicon bronze nails. The copper sheeting will prevent any kind of growth on the hull, lasts pretty much forever, and will prevent Teredo worms from ever paying you a visit. It also has the added benefit of never having to do bottom paint/anti-fouling ever again. I would definitely recommend this option for your boat. If done properly, it'll pretty much last forever.

    If you've already got a leaky deck, you need to handle that ASAP. I cannot stress this enough. The thin layer of paint you put on the wood is not going to protect it. When fresh water hits that interior wood in the bilge, it will begin to swell and rot spores will come to life and quickly turn your boat into the same chocolate cake consistency you had when you bought it. Keeping whatever you've got stored below decks from getting wet is a secondary concern. You have to keep that fresh water out. Seal that deck!! No matter what it takes. There's no such thing as just a little leak or drip here and there. It's insidious and you won't realize the damage until it's too late.

    Lastly, paint everything that the sun is going to touch. I know, I know, the wood looks so pretty, right? I'm a woodworker, I love looking at the stuff, so I get it. But UV radiation will deteriorate the wood, regardless of species. It will weaken, and crack, and then eventually just fall apart. Yes, some people varnish exterior wood trim, sometimes adding a UV blocker to the mix, sometimes not. This helps, but it'll become a never-ending task and it's not foolproof. Paint is. The pigment solids in paint will completely seal and protect the wood from UV radiation. There's plenty of pretty wood to be varnished below decks. Paint everything outside.

    Just my two cents. Glad to see the build coming together so nicely. You'll be out on the water before you know it.

21. Only two colors are acceptable for painting a boat: white and black. And only a fool would paint one black. Herreshoff said it. I agree. Nothing quite as dismal as a stinking hot black boat in the tropics.

22. The smart move would be to talk to your yard crew and see what they usely do after all they do this work every single day for years and some from decades you listen to these Yahoo's on YouTube some of them never been on a boat they only know what they hear talked about on these videos

23. Yeah that boat with proper maintenance could last you a life time and it's big enough to sail anywhere and cross any ocean as long as you put in a water maker even if you have a bunch of kids you got plenty of room
