Shipyard in the USA…Delta Marine, Westport, Christensen, Viking, or Hargrave…or Broward Marine…are they still in business? I think since you mentioned you wanted to get more into sportfishing yachts, it's Viking. Delta Marine though would be my choice. If I had the money they would be it. Relations with Turkey are dicey for the US. So Bering, Numarine and Mengi Ya are all out.

I was on another yachting channel and someone was commenting about how they calculated the range for a yacht based on the burn rate of liters per hour and I had to correct her that the diesel also fueled the generators and sometimes the tender. So if you don't have solar and use the generators on board because of heavy cooking needs, HVAC, washer/dryer, etc. Plus you always wwnt a 10-20% reserve on fuel for unexpected things. So you can't really calculate the range based on burn rates usually

Hi David, I get that Captains will often not know the range of the yacht they serve on. However I find it hard to understand the reason a Captain would not know this information. After all every yacht has a log book. Every engineer keeps an in depth log of the engine's time of use and the revolutions and how much fuel was used. As a long distance trucker I make it my business to understand the capability's of my truck, that includes how far a tank of fuel at a set speed will take me. What are you going to say to the boss if he suddenly says lets go to X that is 3000 nm away and you cant say yep we can do that, but rather splutter and say well let me get a calculator and speak to the engineer cos I don't know what the range of this yacht is. As an owner I would be shocked if my captain could not say off the top of his head if it was possible. After all isn't the captain supposed to know everything about his command, that includes the limits of his yacht. I gotta say I am shocked at this revelation.

My dream is to sail around the world, to visit every port a world traveler should see. To that end, the range of the yacht is important. Being able to cross the Atlantic is important. However can it cross the Pacific? Can it tour Antarctica?

I'd be very interested in a video discussing the differences in the build requirements between a yacht of 499 gross tons displacement and one that exceeds that. How much more expensive would a similar yacht be at 501 gross tons?
