The cheap yellow sponges with the green abrasive side are not good. The abrasive side leaves many tiny scratches behind, I once cleaned a nasty little corner on a mirror, the green side left a blind spot on the glass. Better are the cheap or expensive yellow sponges with a blue side, the scratch site is a nonabrasive plastic kind of material.

I think you already know the answer is it get it not land as soon as you can where you can put a tent over it and deal with replacing all the rotten wood first before you start painting and doing the windows.

Yes, like Henri says, the tab on the end of the measuring tape moves to compensate for its own thickness, depending on whether the tab is clipped over the edge of the piece being measured or if the tab is pushed into a corner while taking an internal measurement…..

If you make yourself a hook on work platform that sits down the side of the boat then you should be able to do more in the water & are you able to pull the boat in close to shore on a big tide so its goes dry. You can just use a sheet of ply with a (100×75 around the edge) on top of the mud to stand on.

Some of your tapping could just be that you are tapping with a solid backing to the ply rather than foam. It may not be too much rot. If you just run a bead of silicone around the old windows before screwing them back on it should keep most of the water out.
