Hand helds 1) occupy your hands 2)takes attention away from task while fumbling to use. There are headsets out there that provide a safer option. Can you imagine being caught in a squall and something happens where one of you has to clip into the jackstays and go forward to unsnag something and you need to use one hand to hold the radio when you require your crewmate to release a clutch or wind a winch in the cockpit.
