Great job Dom, best wishes to the restoration team. Donated.
Sailing Tally Ho – the brilliant youtube documentation of the restoration of the English Fastnet winning cutter Tally Ho – must be the blueprint for this type of video. Much as I like Dom's videos it's a tough act to follow. You definitely need a parrot mate !
Southern queen needs to call Leo . Watch Sampson boat building
Nice video especially as we are about to commemorate Anzac Day in New Zealand.
Lest We Forget.
YES!!!!
You can call Dunkirk ambitious but I believe it was more of a British mindset. We will go and we will get the lads back. Britain is made up of four separate countries till you screw with one!
Excellent
What a masterful job! I wish I could give you 10 thumbs up!!!
Wonderful effort! Great video! Really impressed with the fabrication of the cradle and the bracing, great work! I can't help agreeing with you though that that boat looks very far gone, I'm not sure how much of her will actually be left after "restoration" such a shame it didn't happen 5 years ago or so. Well done! Woudl be great to see how the project gets on!
another great video Dom perhaps a scratch rebuild might be quicker than repair/restoration. At least you have the original to measure up
Two years eh? Of course, it can be done. Anything can be done, If you have the resources and the will. But you're going to have to go some. I'd love to see it happen. So lotsa luck dudes. Keep us posted please Dominic.
Brilliant! Hope your going to cover the restoration? Is she in Saxon?
Many thanks Dominic, thoroughly enjoyed that and have to say with a tear forming in my eye. Thank goodness there are still folk out there that are passionate when it comes to preserving our history, whether it be on land or at sea. Good luck to the team with this ambitious project and I hope they get the public support they deserve, no doubt helped considerably with this excellent video from your good self.
Its a great story and a great challenge, made more complex by an engaging and emotional place in history. The choice between conservation, presevation, restoration, repair or rebuild is always an interesting one with old boats. How much of the original vessel will remain if it is to be made seaworthy again? Will it therefore be the same boat, or a rebuild/replica of the orginal? Will it even be the same shape, let alone not being made of the same timbers…? Conserving what remains and preventing further decay is arguably most authentic, and does not mean the story is forgotten – but a home has to be found where it can remain 'in memorium'. Saving what little can be safely saved and rebuilding the boat to go to sea gives a more engaging end point that is more likely to find a home and continuing use, but by then you have lost the fabric of the original boat. But then again, with wooden boats much of the planking and framing may well have already been replaced over the years, so who is to say what is original anyway…?
Hi Guys, I really like your channel, Volvo Repairs, Living in a small space, dogs on board, be able to have a hair cut by just clicking your fingers, but today I officially love your channel, boat resto, history and respect for those that have gone before us, how nice is it to see living history, thankyou so much travel safely.
Daryl
As a viewer from Australia where we are about to commemorate ANZAC Day on 25th April, this was a timely video reminding us of the spirit and sacrifices made by the people during the time.
Crumbs! What skill, dedication, commitment, and self sacrificing efforts on the part of all those team members. Well done Dom and everyone. Very interesting episode too mate👍.
How fantastic is this project?!? I will love to watch for updates as the project progresses.
Saving memories. What a strong symbol!
What another unbelievable documentary Dominic. You really are very good at what you do. Thank you for taking the time, not just onsite for all the hours of footage, but for the unseen hours on the PC afterwards👏👏. I hope you all get back on the water very soon ⛵🐶
… must says hats off to those that have vision to save and restore historic items such as this and locomotives, planes, vehicles etc. you know what I mean. The hours they invest into something that they may not even live to see the final outcome .. the phrase that comes to mind "those that plant trees of which they will not live to experience the shade" …. have to say sure impressed with how well equipped the team is, and the foresight to be so prepared right from the guy that has the van with the expresso machine, had a good chuckle when I saw that, to all the other tools and variety of steel for fabricating … did you set up a time lapse for this and will you set up several time lapse for the entirety of the reclamation of her glory …. thx for the share Dom … as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ….
Sounds like a great project.
Seeing this video has made me very happy.
As someone whose father and uncle took Little Ships to Dunkirk, I've been interested in the fate of Southern Queen for a number of years. I'm part of a group that approached the owner to try and purchase her, with a view to completing a rebuild and returning her to home waters in Folkestone (very convenient for returns to Dunkirk). With his agreement, we've removed the heavy Gardner engine and are keeping it safe, with the intention of rebuilding that too.
It's true, Southern Queen is in poor shape but it's worth saying that, on the basis of my inexpert inspection, her oak frames are in pretty good shape. The hull planking was replaced some twenty-odd years ago with softwood and, having been stored ashore for most of that time, it has dried out and rotted. The frames may possibly be salvageable but, at the very least, will provide the restorers with templates, should they need replacing.
First and foremost, what is needed is the funding to save her, as she saved many. We have some ring-fenced funds, raised by our association – The Remembrance Line Association – and we are intending to apply for Heritage Lottery funding in due course. I'm glad to see the Go Fund Me appeal and have just contributed to it. I really hope many more will do the same.
Well done, Sailing Cadoha!
well done
You're a superb presenter Dom. A wonderful slice of history like Southern Queen will always be worth saving – it's unique!
Will you be following the restoration? It would make a great series of videos!
Had many a trip on her when she was in Scilly under skipper owner Alec Hicks.
… thank you all for remembering … as you closed "Lest We Forget" … please keep documenting this restoration of this little piece of most important history …
Good on you 👍
I truly hope you pull the restoration off, good luck
