  1. Hi there. Starlink marine would be useful for The crew, or sailing partners, anything outside solo sailing. My thoughts on that.

  2. Tim. The Roam plan has been up for 3-4 months now. I'm using TWO of them. 1 on my new Tug-Trawler just splashed in Lake Ontario and another on my new Nomad Van driving all over Ontario.
The current price is $170/month. I am using BOTH with a Star-Mount flat mount dish holder which I got from California and they work In Motion perfectly….. I am getting speeds 160-250 mbps on a regular basis.
EVEN in my de prioritized hours i'm getting 40-60mbps.
4 days ago they announced a NEW ROAM
    plan …. but its $350/mo

    Currently the BASE ROAM
plan is working up to 300-350 miles offshore in the north and as far as 80 miles East of Bermuda and all through the Bahamas and Caribbean with no issue. 3 of my cruiser buddies from RYYC in Toronto now in the BVI are getting PERFECT service on their ROAM packages and also paying $170/mo
Furthermore,,, a friend in Halifax who works for Starlink Canada assures me in Feb 2024 prices for ROAM will be just under $100/mo

The " limited 50gb " plan of de prioritized service is ONLY if you change your plan to the " new " Maritime or Ocean plan
    Dont Do it.
The regular ROAM plan works perfect and will until years end.
The Star-Mount is a bit pricey BUT it mounts flat and works phenomenal !!!
In my Van it is stable up to 80 km/hr ( 50mph ) and then up to 120km/hr it is intermittent as it takes longer to buffer as it switches from one bird to the next.
Starlink is working Great right now for boaters IF you know what you are doing.

Cheers & Beers & BBQ Steers

  3. Currently in the berrys 120nm from Florida, no problem with changes in speed or uptime. Will keep updating it’s been a real money saver! Hope it’s not going to be the bait and switch people are talking about.

  4. Thanks so much for the consult yesterday Tim. So valuable and helped us with the whole purchasing thing. It was the best one hour of “navigating” the whole process of buying our first boat. With great excitement and a huge thank you. Jaime & Claudia. Love what you are doing with your channel. 🙏

  5. Something has to pay for the sats.
Try think of it as being a patreon for Starlink.
Sure, it's a nice chunk of cash, but you gotta remember something.
You do live a life of luxury only about 0.01 % of all human beings ever gets close to
and Starlink is meant to eventualy serve all of them.
    So to the other 99.99 % , you're a hero !

  6. Man still too expensive. Just recently I read about a sailing boat sinking the eperb thingy didn’t work!! They sent a May Day another yacht heard their mayday but as they was in the middle of nowhere radio didn’t cut it but another yacht had star link and what they was saying was because of star link the rescue was so much quicker . It was posted in a Facebook group but I can’t remember the group but it was very informative and cronicalled the whole event from all involved. I wish I could remember the group?

  7. SO WHAT IS YOUR DREAM BOAT?
Watching your video comparing Catalina Mk 2 and Island Packet, You said you like them both BUT, both are not your dream boat.
So what is your dream boat for your knd of sailing…
Big Thanks, Really enjoy your videos.

  8. You just shouldn't advertise the cell phone usage in a case of emergency on a boat as an improvement. Why? It's simple: In an emergency, you really do NOT want to use a cell-phone like emergency handling because it is always a 1:1 communication! But if you're in serious trouble, what you would definitely want is that any soul within your VHF operation range is alarmed and may send help towards you ASAP!

  9. long story short – Elon wants to know your location, if you deny him that privilege, probably not long in the future – sorry – no Starlink for you 😛 or you'll get some 33.6k speed good enough for weather update maybe

  10. I knew this bullshit was coming. As soon as they figure out how to block people a few feet from shore they will. Shame.

I don't care about using it while moving but having it while at anchor I see as a necessity.

  11. Just speculation here, but seems to me this “term and condition” is more of a CYA for Starlink than a restriction in use. As stated, this system should not be relied upon for critical information while underway. If it were and it failed, Starlink could easily be sued for that failure. This restriction probably provides a layer of liability protection . Seems doubtful that they would actively monitor and prevent such usage.

  12. my starlink worked in st martin , then in st thomas , but when i went20 more miles to culebra PR i got a disconnected message . back in st thomas and still not working . geofencing problem ? don’t know. ,but i doesn’t work . i read that starlink conditions of service forbids Any use of starlink on the water , even in harbor . i don’t know , i only know i got shut down in PR .

  13. The offshore thing seems simple to me. Once your far enough out to sea that you are hitting satellites that have no ground station to send your signal to, it will relay to other satellites that do. I am sure they have plenty of data now about where each satellite looses ground signals anyway. So however far out that is, if you are out there, they will know. If you are still in shore enough to still be hitting satellites with ground contact, where you are at does not affect them. So if you can see waves hitting a beach still, your probably ok. If not, they may notice.

  14. I think I'll stick to Digicel for a little bit longer. Not Ideal but not a big investment either.

I would hate to invest and use Starlink in the grey area of the acceptable use/terms just to have them crack down on it.

  15. In my recent conversation with T-mobile tech support, they mentioned that the US is currently subsidizing Starlink service to assist the Ukraine, allocating nearly 60% of the system capacity. Also, the recent post launch failures of an entire new batch of satellites due to a solar mass ejection event is also affecting quality of service

  16. I enjoy watching your channel and listening to your comments. I bought a 1983 Pearson 303 for $10,000 and completely refitted it in the last year for a total investment of about $50,000. After watching several YouTube sailing videos, I began to believe that I should have bought a bigger boat. But unlike many of the boats you have reviewed, all I want is a coastal cruiser. Also I am 69 years old and sail with a young man who I am teaching how to sail while he does the heavy work. We were just off the St. Augustine inlet the other day and wind picked up from 12 to 19 knots. The Pearson heeled over Oh so gently with a full main it was almost like she was saying, "Thank you.!" I call her "The Great Escape" because she takes me away from the world and its troubles. With everything except the hull and engine updated to 2022, I believe she can take me up and down the East coast in safety and loving kindness.

  17. Haha, the junk you put on your roof is a nice way of referring to a military grade phased array antenna 🙂

BTW T-Mobile needs Starlink V2 sats. They don't fit on Falcon 9 or Heavy, they need Starship (the largest man made flying object that exploded last Wednesday).

And also the V2's have proper intersatellite optical coms, which is crucial for bandwidth far from ground station, such as the ocean or deserts or polar regions or very rural areas etc…

The Maritime service is aimed at high end users on multimillion dollar motoryachts like you say. And cruise ships too. It's likely the small boats will remain with the RV's under the new Roaming thing. Don't ask me how that'll work, its all very much in flux, though they are aware of the customer base and also that most boaters will not be buying the official maritime version due to cost. So we shall see. I believe it should keep working normally, but no promises from me, I'm familiar with the hardware, nothing else.

Also keep in mind this is very new and SpaceX is expecting at least another 20 billion in expenditure for the full phase 1 constellation. So your paying first adopter premiums right now. Of the phase 1 constellation so far only 20% of satellites are on orbit. So the system is at 1/5 capacity only, technically not operational but in testing. They honestly don't care that much about low budget boaters right now, it costs them a lot to offer bandwidth of shore compared to on shore. At least within the range of ground stations, which is still 100+ km. So you can be that far off shore and still be talking to ground stations via just one satellite. Especially the older sats up at 500 km. They got a fair bit of reach.

  18. Sorry for the spam but I thought some may be interested. I did some digging regarding coverage area per satellite. Currently Starlink have a 25° arc of coverage, to be upraded to 40° eventually. At 550 km that works out to a radius of 950 km. So you can be almost 1000 km from a ground station without needing laser comms.

So if you cross the Atlantic you should be able to have connection to ground station for most but the middle third of the journey, which is still covered, just not that extensively. Most are equatorial though. It's really the Polar regions that must have laser comms but besides a few maniacs like Erik Aanderaa it's not needed by many sailors.

  19. Your videos are very informative which is what keeps me coming back, but I always watch them at 2x speed because of all the commercialization of the channel

  20. Whats your top 5 cruisers lower priced even if i have to retrofit for Caribbean cruising?? I dont use discord so not sure how to contact you.
