The check valve goes in the hose. It prevent siphoning back. If you rely on the electric bilge pump it will drain the battery m, when the battery runs down the boat sinks, unless you are there to close the seacock and pump out. A check valve takes a few dollars and a few minutes to install. Better still is to route the bilge outlet hose to the stern where it will usually be above the water, and fill in the current hole.

Had an odd bilge issue recently too lol... My check valve was creating an air lock somehow and stopping my pump from self priming even when submerged
