Most boat shafts aren't pushed to anywhere near failure. Usually less than 30%, even at full throttle with the propeller tearing itself to shreds on rocks. They are tough!

The shaft grooves appear to be corrosion caused by the slow washing away of grease from a bad seal. This underscore the preventative maintenance need to disassemble, clean, inspect, re-grease and possibly re-seal all through-hulls and mechanicals on the boat on a regular basis, if for no other than doing so protects the metal from corrosion with a new seal and fresh coat of grease.

I'm likely on my last truck in life, and I've been doing preventative maintenance on it since it had 18,000 miles. It certainly has dings and wear, but all mechanicals are working like new. In 2024, I'll be rebuilding the engine!

It's definitely been worth my time keeping it running in tip-top shape. ๐Ÿ™‚
