Not strapping in, as you rightly did, in these conditions, is akin to driving without a seat belt these days. It’s just sheer pointless illogical obstinance, for the sake of being obstinate. There is no reason not to strap in when solo in blue/coldwater in 20+ knots.

At https://youtu.be/vabsrPkrUCY?t=879 regarding the sail on the fishing boat.
These are called "mesan" in Norway (mizzen in English) and have historically been found on all smaller fishing boats around here.

Their intended use is to keep the boat stable into the wind, when working with nets and lines.
These days with thrusters, and better autopilots I guess they are slowly getting retired.

(Sold a lot of bottles of that as a 20s year old waiter in the late 1990s-early 2000s.)
