(Opinion) Your course was sort of a classic for disaster by becoming 'embayed'. You needed to get out of the Bay far into the Atlantic straightaway, then, rougher or not, you'd have sea room, free of the tidal currents and vertical waves the shallows, and safe to make your way to La Corunã. Do that course in the autumn and you might die.
