Back in the 1970's I was onboard the USS Constellation working on the flight deck. I was responsible for my squadron commander's aircraft at all times. The ship was caught in a typhoon we could not outrun and the flight deck was shut down to all operations. When they towed me to my parking spot on the bow the ship plowed into a large swell and the aircraft, tow tractor and myself slid to within 5 feet of the deck edge at the bow. One of my three main wheels was hanging in mid air over the water and the ship just kept plowing into the 50+ foot swells sending water over my aircraft's canopy. They finally attached enough chains and multiple tow trucks to hold me fast to the deck. I sat in the plane shaking until my buddies pulled me out of the cockpit and carried me to sick bay where they sedated me out cold. I went back to work on flight deck the next day. Oh, it was night shift also.

I really appreciate these videos about life on our current ships. As a child, we visited the USS Constitution and a WWII ship, but I don’t remember her name. It made an impression on me how compact and functional everything was, and how everything seemed to be metal. Common quarters were so tiny. I hope to bring my children to the USS New Jersey this summer now that I’ve found out about the exhibit.
