Untethered due to depth perhaps? I don't think its just to allow it to move around more easily. A 5KM umbilical chord would seem quite difficult to provide/manage but i'm no expert. Also you say this is the only vessel that can dive to these depths. I'm not sure that's true as there are a few that can go beyond this depth and already have done I believe.

This entire fiasco just reeks of too much money, not enough sense. I've been reading everything I can find about this company and their sub and I am not impressed with their apparent philosophy concerning safety and testing. They fired one of their employees who raised some real concerns about the hull and it's lack of testing concerning pressure cycling and delamination of the carbon fiber.

IT MIGHT BE A BIT CALLOUS but wny didn't they have a back-up/rescue arrangement. Be it mountain climbing, cave exploration, or any extreme activity they all depend on public services for rescue. Lucky taxpayers.

I saw on another channel that a former employee was fired and sued for “exposing business secrets” which they later settled out of court. Apparently that individual, the former employee, is currently on board the main boat.. How do we know he hasn’t tampered or sabotaged the submersible to make a point. Seems like being sued after doin the right thing and loosing a lot of money would create some resentment
