For wood that has softened or deteriorated because of water ingress, may I suggest that a wet rot wood hardener be applied before the epoxy? It's an inexpensive liquid that is easily absorbed by the wood and hardens it enough to make it stronger and waterproof. It will increase the life of the wood which you opt not to change.
