Winglets definitely increase the opportunities for getting jammed into features of a reef or bottom, making it harder to get off. They're almost like the back hooks of a fishing hook.

They're also not completely rigid vertically with the weight of the hull on them, so could bend upwards as you ride up a reef or bottom protrusion, to then snap back down into a trough. Locking you in.

In general, the more complex the shape, dynamically as well as statically, of an appendage, the more likely it will needlessly resist getting off a reef it managed to accidentally get on. A straight, vertical keel (or pivoting centreboard), is unlikely to surprise. Once you add stuff poking out in all directions, you're definitely trading off some predictability of behaviour, in situations where your really don't want that.

Unless they are fairly hydrodynamically significant (well above my pay grade.....), I'd just as well not have them.

My only question would be, can the full weight of the dried out boat sit on these keels? I believe any stub keeled boats can. Monohulls rest on their hull sides, not their keels. Any comments?

Live aboard a Gemini sailing cat. Has retractable center boards and retractable rudders. This arrangement allows the boat to be set on sand and dried out if necessary. Have never done this intentionally, but a couple of times accidentally. Being a shallow draft boat I regularly take it into skinny water (because I can) mostly to find anchorage space where others can't go. Consequently occasionally bump into things sticking up from the bottom. Luckily, never anything as solid as a large rock, and never while under sail (harder to stop). Each encounter resulted in a little noise and the board or rudder just pushing up out of the way. Never any permanent damage only scratched paint. I am a cruiser. The Gemini is NOT a racer, so it fits me perfectly.

That was really interesting…loved Erik's perspective. And for me personally, it was cool to see them using some fluid dynamics software I worked on a few years ago!
