I fixed an old generator by running reverse current through the generator motor. Hooked a charged battery negative to positive, positive to negative on generator. While it's off and then it charged when I started it.

Hey great work , there can only be two leaks either the o rings on the heat exchanger or the heat exchanger pipes themselves or the head gasket , can’t be anything else .

If you have a 12 v battery charger that has a step down transformer then that can supply the excitation ensure correct polarity. The charger needs to be powered from another source but it proves where the fault lies.
