Most towns have alternator and starter motor repair shops , should be cheap to get it fixed!

my first car was positive ground (earth) and I still have it and a few other positive ground tractors some of which are converted and some that aren't I always check where which side of the battery goes and I bet now so will you. Good call on the scraping v.s. sanding. Looks like you are making good progress there!
