Hey, you're back on board! I brought my Starlink to Vietnam, installed in on the fore deck of the new Seawind 1280 we intended to sail to the Philippines, Taiwan, Okinawa, Japan and finally Canada. For most of the trip I just had the legs tied to anything on the deck. It held up extremely well. On the way across the Pacific I tried installing it at the aft, between the fiberglass support for the hard top and the life lines. Didn't work at all. Moved it less than two meters forward, worked fine.
I installed my cord like you did. Sticking out the side. I think the intention was that it drop out the bottom. Sticking out the side allowed me in an emergency to rush fore, pop out the dishy with the cable attached and bring them back to the cockpit. The base can survive anything.
Getting it back home to my boat I finally decided to try one of the fishing pole holders. Perfect. I shimmed out the pole to taper fit in the holder, busted out the bottom of the holder, taped everything up to keep the water out. It woke right up and told me my password was wrong.....
The biggest issue was when we left proximity to land we triggered Global Roaming, this meant that after 50 gigs we'd be charged $2/gig. Shouldn't be a problem, right? My iPhone used up 4 gigs by noon one day doing nothing special. (I down loaded a 250mb audiobook and read a couple of newspapers, no video). There's all this automatic back up to the cloud, sharing photos, auto updates to Apps that if haven't used in years and if you thought about them you'd delete them. We turned off everything we could. Navionics apps gobbled up a surprising amount of data.
