Great tips guys. I would add two things. Don't buy on emotion. If you fall in love with a boat you may end up blind to all the problems and how long (and expensive) it will be to get on the water. Not that I am going through this with my current boat… Second, if you don't know what kind of boat you want, charter as many different models as you can. This can really open your eyes to what works and what doesn't. Early in my sailing days I was dead set on buying a Hans Christian. They are awesome, go anywhere boats. Then I sailed one and I couldn't get over how small the cockpit was. Great for offshore work, but miserable at anchor when trying to entertain or stretch out and take a nap. Cheers!

Survey, survey, survey… I know three boats that were bought without survey, and one of these three, without inspection.. One required a new steel keel, one was written off immediately after the sale, and the third was advertised using three or four year old photos, and a sales video the last time the yacht changed hands. When the purchaser arrived to see his new boat, it was almost derelict… Survey survey survey…

So,– when acclaiming to know, what you're doing, and trying to look smart,– why not achieve that by sounding smart, and knowing how to do that. Not smart is choosing a name from greek mythology and not knowing how that greek name is pronounced. Just saying "SEFFER" is sooooo much unsmart and NOT knowing!!! It really hurts to people , who know about greek mythology and languish .Please , please, do not always show, that you don't know and don't care. Sadly, believing in Google does not really help here, as always when asking for pronunciation , Googles horizon does not overcome american "short" thinking. There is a saying: When in Rome, do like the romans do!! Please please widen up up your horizon! There is actually an original greek pronounciation out there. Skipping the ending "os" would be allowed and just fine. But always showing that kind of NOT knowing and NOT caring all about is so so self intimidating . Why would someone trying to show cultural thinking and knowledge and show loudly , to fail in doing so, and beeing unable and ignorant. And always repeating that and publish that worldwide!! It really always is embarrassing to percept and a real shame!
