You are talking about the Barbary Pirates from Africa. They used to raid the South West of England as far up as the Severn to enslave fishermen and people on land. Did the same around that part of Ireland. Took whole villages as slaves.

I think the real reason sailing ships of yore had cannons was to keep their anchorages clear.

We looked at Horseshoe Bay and crossed it off the list. Our smallest anchorage was on Gola. There was definitely only room for one boat and lots of rocks and a few fishing boys to avoid on arrival!

I hate it when people anchor to close.
A couple of years ago I was crewing on my friends 56ft boat, him and his wife were on shore having a date night and I was left on the boat with the 10 y/o girl. I just made dinner and we were eating in the saloon when suddenly I saw a boat backing up just 2 meters to our port. It was a huge 60ft charter Catamaran with French crew, they decided that hanging 10m behind our stern with only 1:3 scope was okay and the stepped into their dingy and zoomed of. Later that night we had to be all hands on deck trying to fender of the big cat, because they were well inside our swing range. Luckily no damage but no sleep as well.
