It's an urban myth, based on static charge coming from the phone. However, there has been no incident where the cause of a fire at a gas station has been directly linked to the phones static charge. The real danger with phones, is that stupid people get distracted while using them. People have started fires because they touched their vehicle and passed that larger static charge to the fumes at their gas tank, while fueling. Other people have walked into their and other peoples' fuel hoses at the station while talking on their phones, thus dislodging them from the tanks and shooting fuel everywhere. The moral of the story, is really just to get off of your damn phone and focus, when you are surrounded by flammable liquids.

When cellular phones first came in there was a lot of concern in fuel stations about the energy in the radio waves igniting fuel. They were banned and policed. But that’s all slacked off now and if it was a real problem it would have happened repeatedly nearly everywhere since mobiles are so ubiquitous. Perhaps Europe is just a bit slower to let go of their safety concern. Or maybe they are right…. 🙂 If I am ever bored enough I will get around to looking into it. Meanwhile…. Thanks for the enjoyable vid.
