Alan's doing pretty much what I used to do with a single sail. Minimal sail area, strapped in hard amidships, tiller lashed down to leeward so that the keels stall and the boat is making ~ 1 knot forwards, ~ 1-2 knots sideways. Technically not hove-to in the way that a boat with two sails does it, but more like gently fore-reaching.

I’ve never heaved to, but every diagram of the procedure I’ve seen (for bermuda rigs) seems to rely on the backwarded jib to keep the boat from coming up through the wind. Is there something I am missing. I was looking at your ring, with the one sail and tiller lashed, and wondering why your boat wouldn’t just come up into irons….?
